Educational opportunities are available for local Catholics
who are seeking certification in Church ministry, would like to explore
their call to ministry, or are interested in increasing knowledge about
their faith and Church.
Information sessions for the diocesan School for Pastoral Ministry start
this month. The school is a formation process for those who would like
to explore their call to ministry, for lay ministers interested in building
practical skills, and for catechists and Catholic school teachers who
want to build a more solid foundation in their faith.
Classes are held one Saturday each month for three years at Holy Names
University in Oakland. In addition to class instruction, students participate
in retreat experiences annually and meet in small groups once a month.
Information sessions will be held at: St. Benedict Parish Hall, Oakland,
on Oct. 25, from 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.; Holy Names University, Oakland,
in Brennan Hall on Oct. 27, 10:30 a.m. – noon; St. Raymond Parish
Conference Center, Dublin, on Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.; St. Mary
Parish Conference Room, Walnut Creek, on Nov. 4, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.;
and Holy Spirit/Newman Hall Library, Berkeley, on Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m. –
9 p.m.
The next three-year program begins Jan. 19, 2008. For more information,

The Serra Catechetical Institute (SCI), a formation process for parish
and Catholic school catechists, parents and all adults who want to know
their faith better, is offering new classes on Thursday evenings twice
monthly in Concord through December 2008.
Students receive 60 hours of catechetical formation that includes spiritual
development (one’s relationship with Jesus), doctrinal formation
(sacraments, creed, and morality), and catechetical process and methodology.
SCI satisfies the basic California Catechist Certificate. The registration
deadline is Oct. 31 for classes that start in November. Contact Melissa
Hyatt at (510) 267-8370 or mhyatt@oakdiocese.org.
