Father Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities
USA, said he is dismayed that President Bush vetoed a bill passed by Congress
with strong bipartisan support to strengthen and improve the State Children’s
Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). “This veto puts the health of
many of our nation’s children at risk,” he said.
The Oct. 3 veto, he said, “is the wrong decision at the wrong time.”
Social service agencies and community groups throughout the nation lobbied
aggressively for the bill’s passage. Among those traveling to Washington
D.C. to urge support were parish leaders from Oakland, Richmond and Pittsburg.
The White House said the veto was a way to stop the move towards government-run
health programs and providing coverage to children whose families could
afford health care. President Bush said SCHIP should be expanded by $5
billion instead, not $35 million as the bill requested.
