The late Father Bill O’Donnell has a prominent place in the new 40-foot mural in Berkeley’s Old City Hall honoring civil rights leader and 20-year Councilwoman Maudelle Shirek. Father O’Donnell worked with Shirek for many years on a number of civil rights and social justice issues before his death in 2003. The mural, painted by Daniel Galvez and Mildred Howard, also shows Shirek with Nelson Mandela and Oakland Mayor and former Congressman Ron Dellums, for whom she was a political mentor. Shirek, 96, was present at the mural’s unveiling in June. The mural can be seen at 2180 Milvia Street in Berkeley. GREG TARCZYNSKI PHOTO |
