OBITUARIES

Sister Mary Martin Bush, O.P.
Mission San Jose Dominican Sister Mary Martin Bush, a longtime educator and leader in her religious community, died July 2 in Fremont. She was 97 and had been a Dominican Sister for 71 years.

A native of Redding, CA, Sister Bush devoted more than 64 years to education. In the Oakland Diocese she worked at St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland. She also served at schools in Oregon, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Los Altos and San Jose.

Sister Bush was a counselor general in the community for one term and moderator of the Dominican Guild for many years.

The funeral Mass was held July 4 at the Sisters Chapel in Fremont with burial the following day in the Sisters cemetery. Memorial gifts: Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, the Mother Pia Backes Educational Fund or the Vision of Hope Fund, all at 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.


Brother Victor Christian Conners, F.S.C.
Christian Brother Victor Christian Conners, a former staff member at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, died July 13 in Napa. He was 94 and had been a Christian Brothers for 54 years.

Conners, a native of Eureka, served in the Seabees in the Pacific during World War II and worked in construction, including the Golden Gate Bridge. At age 40, he began his studies as a Christian Brother.

Following his graduation from St. Mary’s College in Moraga in 1958, he worked for 10 years at La Salle High School in Pasadena as supervisor of maintenance. Then he returned to St. Mary’s College as archivist and assistant librarian in charge of audio-visuals, a position he held until retiring in 1992.

The funeral Mass was held July 20 at Mont La Salle Chapel in Napa; burial followed in the cemetery. Memorial donations: Lasallian Education Fund, De La Salle Institute, 4401 Redwood Road, Napa, CA 94558.


Sister Margaret Mary McSweeney, O.P.
Mission San Jose Dominican Sister Margaret Mary McSweeney, a longtime educator, died July 5 in Fremont. She was 76 and had been a Dominican Sister for 58 years.

Born in San Francisco, Sister McSweeney taught at St. Elizabeth Elementary School and St. Elizabeth High School, both in Oakland. She also taught in Los Angeles, La Canada/Flintridge, San Gabriel and San Francisco.

The funeral Mass was held July 9 at the Sisters Chapel in Fremont with burial the following day in the Sisters cemetery. Memorials: Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund, or the Vision of Hope Fund, at 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.
