Family Aid to Catholic Education (FACE) is sponsoring a spring scholarship campaign to raise tuition funds for more than 1100 students who are waiting for grants that will allow them to attend Catholic elementary and high schools in the Oakland Diocese.

These students are in addition to the 900 students who have already been awarded FACE grants for the 07-08 school year.

“The need is great,” said Anne Rynders, executive director of FACE. Eligible elementary school students receive a grant of $1,625, and high school students are given $2,850.

Rynders said a few “supportive friends of FACE” have offered a dollar for dollar match of $70,000 for all donations received by June 29.

FACE has been helping students from low-income families since 1978. During the 2006-2007 school year alone, some $1.85 million in tuition grants were given to 914 students – 612 in elementary school and 302 in high school.

“The program works,” said Rynders, noting that FACE students are serious students. For example, last year, 100 percent of FACE graduating seniors continue their studies at a two-year or four-year college or university.

Donations can be sent to: FACE, 3014 Lakeshore Ave., Oakland, CA 94610.
