CCHD seeks applications for local grants

Applications are now being taken for grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

Last year, nine groups in Alameda and Contra Costa counties received a total of $157,000. Four projects received national grants with another five projects getting local grants, said Maurine Behrend, director for the local CCHD office at Catholic Charities of the East Bay. In addition, two groups received national grants for technical assistance.

CCHD is the domestic anti-poverty program sponsored by the U.S. Catholic bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promoting and supporting community-run self-help organizations. Founded in 1969, CCHD empowers the poor to participate in and work for justice in their communities.

Behrend said the deadline for 2007 local grant applications is July 31. Application forms are available on the website of Catholic Charities of the East Bay at www.cceb.org/public.

For potential applicants unfamiliar with CCHD, Behrend has scheduled a workshop on June 12 at Catholic Charities, 433 Jefferson St. in Oakland. The workshop, which begins at 4 p.m., will provide CCHD criteria, who should and should not apply, and information about the application process.

Last year’s local grant recipients were: St. Mary’s Senior Advocates for Hope and Justice in Oakland, $7,500; Laotian Leadership Project, Oakland, $7,500; Oakland Housing Authority Tenant Leadership, $7,500; EPIC, Environmental Prevention in Communities of Oakland, $8,500; Shellmound/Sacred Sites Peace Walk, Alameda, $1,000.

National grants went to: Contra Costa ACORN Violence Reduction and Youth Activities, in Concord, $25,000; Just Cause Housing and Jobs for Low-Income Residents in Oakland, $10,000; La Lucha del Journalero Leadership Development for Day Labors in Oakland, $35,000; and Oakland ACORN Slumlord Abatement and School Improvement, $35,000.

Receiving national technical assistance grants were: ACORN Regional Land Use Action Committee, $10,000; and the Worker-Owned Landscape/Maintenance Cooperative, $10,000.

Funds for CCHD are collected annually in November through a collection in parishes across the country. Seventy five percent of the money is sent to the national office for national grants; the remaining twenty-five percent is retained by each local diocese for smaller local grants.

For information about an application or to RSVP for the June 12 workshop, call Maurine Behrend at (510) 768-3164 or e-mail her at maurineb@cceb.org
