EWTN will broadcast Pope Benedict’s visit to Brazil

The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) will offer extensive coverage of Pope Benedict XVI’s May 9-13 visit to Brazil.

Programming will begin with a live telecast of the arrival of the Holy Father and Brazil’s welcoming ceremonies on May 9 at 12:30 p.m. and repeated at 6 p.m.

Coverage resumes on May 10 at 6:30 a.m. when the pope meets with the president of Brazil; the encore presentation is scheduled for midnight. The pontiff’s three-hour meeting with young people will air at 1:30 p.m. and be repeated at 6 p.m.

On May 11, the pope will preside at a Mass and canonization ceremony from Campo de Marte, with the broadcast at 4:30 a.m. and encore at 6 p.m.

The pope’s meeting with the bishops of Brazil will air at 11:30 a.m. and repeat at 11 p.m. The Pope’s arrival in Aparecida, a town in Sao Paulo famous for its Marian shrine, will be shown at 3 p.m., and repeated at 3 a.m.

Pope Benedict’s visit to Fazenda da Esperanca (“Farms of Hope”) will air live on May 12 at 5:30 a.m., the encore at 10 a.m. At 1:30 p.m. the Holy Father will visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida where, among other things, he will recite the Rosary. The encore will air at 6:30 p.m.

The pope’s visit to Brazil will end on May 13. He will preside at the inaugurating Mass of the fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean. The telecast begins at 5 a.m. and encore at 9 p.m.

Later, Pope Benedict will attend the opening working session of the bishops’ conference and then depart for Rome. Coverage will begin at 11:30 a.m. No encore is scheduled.
