Outreach ministry invites parents of
gay children to evening of reflection

The diocesan Gay and Lesbian Outreach Ministry Team is offering an evening of discussion and reflection for parents and friends of gay and lesbian persons, Thursday, May 17, at St. John Vianney Church in Walnut Creek from 7-9 p.m.

The purpose is to help them understand their children and respond with support and love, said Rita Billeci, diocesan coordinator of family life ministry and a member of the ministry team.

Michael Harmuth, a team member and the father of gay child, will introduce a 37-minute documentary “Straight from the Heart” that features parents of gay children talking about their struggles.

“This film gives insight into what other parents have done in this situation and what they wish they would have done,” said Billeci.

After viewing the film, participants will be invited to discuss it in small groups.
The evening will begin and end with prayer.

Billeci said everyone attending the evening program will be given a copy of the U.S. bishops’ document “Always Our Children” which states that all homosexual persons have a right to be welcomed into the church community, to hear the Word of God and to receive pastoral care.

She said persons engaged in pastoral ministry are encouraged to attend the workshop so they can facilitate greater understanding and respect for persons with a homosexual orientation in their parishes while making it clear that the Church does not condone or support homosexual behavior.

Persons wanting more information about the May 17 event or to speak with Billeci can call her at 510-267-8392.
