Sister Dolores Cazares, SNJM
Sister Dolores Cazares, a school counselor for Catholic Charities of the East Bay for nearly 10 years, died March 23 in San Jose after a lengthy illness. She was 68 years of
age and had been a Sister of the Holy Names for 48 years.

Born in Alhambra, CA, Sister Cazares, also known as Sister Filumena Marie, taught in elementary and high schools in northern and southern California, worked in youth, parish, renewal and retreat ministries, and was a counselor for Catholic Charities from 1995-2004 and as a counselor at St. Clement and St. Bede Schools in Hayward.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Jenny and Jack Becker; brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Adrienne Cazares; brother-in-law, Ernie Eastlund; and a niece and nephews.

The funeral Mass was held March 28 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. Memorial donations may be made to the Ministry Fund, Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031.



Father Paul Emmet Duggan

Father Paul Emmet Duggan, a retired priest of the San Francisco Archdiocese and a former associate pastor at St. Jerome Parish in El Cerrito, died March 30 in San Francisco. He was 82.

A native of Berkeley, he was the sixth of seven children, Three of his siblings also went into religious life. His brothers are retired archdiocesan priests, Father Eugene F. Duggan and Father William E. Duggan. The late Holy Names Sister Claire Duggan was their sister.

Father Paul Duggan attended St. Augustine School in Oakland and St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Mountain View and St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park before his ordination to the priesthood in 1948. He served as associate pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in San Francisco, St. Jerome Parish in El Cerrito, and at St. Patrick Parish in San Jose before joining the faculty of Serra High School in San Mateo in 1956.

The priest also was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and held chaplaincy assignments at the Veterans Administration Center in Los Angeles, the Veterans Administration Center in Palo Alto and Menlo Park, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cleveland, OH.

In 1970 he became founding pastor of St. Augustine Parish in South San Francisco and later served as pastor at St. William Parish in Los Altos, Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Daly City and at St. Cecilia Parish in Lagunitas. He retired from pastoral ministry in 1984.

In recent years he lived at Serra Clergy House in San Mateo before moving to Alma Via in San Francisco in 2004.

The funeral Mass was held at St. Thomas More Church in San Francisco on April 4. Burial was held the following day at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland.

Sister Maura O’Connor, SNJM
Sister Maura O’Connor, an educator who also served as a chaplain at Oakland’s Highland Hospital, died March 24 at the age of 96. She had been a vowed Sister of the Holy Names for 57 years.

A native of San Francisco, Sister O’Connor, also known as Sister Kathryn Loretta, taught business and Spanish at Oakland’s Holy Names High School from 1949-53. She also taught at Marin Catholic High School and at schools in southern California. From 1979-81 she taught English as a Second Language at St. Anthony Parish in Oakland.

Sister O’Connor is perhaps best remembered for her volunteer and paid ministry at Highland Hospital in Oakland where she served as chaplain in the maternity and nursery wards for 20 years (1981-2001). As part of her ministry she collected holy cards and blankets for Hispanic and low-income women.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Ramsaur; sister-in-law, Georgene O’Connor; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The funeral Mass took place at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos on March 31. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. Memorial donations may be made to the Ministry Fund, Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031.
