A delegation
of East Bay Catholics will join Catholics from around the state at Catholic
Lobby Day April 24 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown
Sacramento.
Sponsored annually by the California Catholic Conference, this year’s
theme is
“Faithful Citizenship.” Participants will meet with legislators
on four key bills: physician-assisted suicide, public social services,
compassionate release for inmates, and student financial aid to review
key legislative issues and public policy from a Catholic perspective.
The day, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include a morning information
and issue briefing session. Bishop Richard Garcia of Monterey will celebrate
Mass with Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala of Los Angeles as homilist.
Participants will take part in a march to the steps of the state Capitol
for a noon rally, followed by visits to legislators.
Participants will receive a packet with lobbying tips and background information,
and be able to discuss issues with others from their own and other dioceses.
Catholics in the Oakland Diocese wishing to attend should contact Mary
Doyle, social justice coordinator, at (510) 267-8379 or mdoyle@oakdiocese.org.
Registration forms can be downloaded at www.oakdiocese.org/pastoral/SocialJustice/resources/LobbyDayRegistrationForm2007.pdf
Registration cost is $5. Doyle is encouraging participants to carpool
or use AMTRAK.
