M. Rita Bernard, CSC
Holy Cross Sister M. Rita Bernard, who taught at Oakland’s St. Bernard
School in the early 1960s, died Nov. 4 in Notre Dame, Indiana. She was
95.
A native of Appleton, Wisconsin, she taught at elementary schools in central
and southern California, Idaho and Utah. She also worked as a counselor
at Holy Cross High School in Mountain View, and in various other capacities,
including hospital education services. She retired in Ventura, Calif,
and was active in the local community before moving back to Indiana for
health reasons.
The funeral Mass took place Nov. 7 in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto
in Notre Dame, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters
of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, St. Mary’s, Notre
Dame, IN 46556.

Josephine Martin Young, CSJ
Sister Josephine Martin Young, a teacher at several schools in the Oakland
Diocese, died Nov. 10 at the age of 76. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph
of Carondelet for 58 years.
A native of Oakland’s St. Jarlath Parish, she dedicated her life
to education. In the Oakland Diocese she served at St. Catherine School
in Martinez, St. Perpetua School in Lafayette, St. Agnes School in Concord,
and St. Patrick School in Oakland. In 1999 she went to Carondelet High
School in Concord to serve students in need of tutoring, special instruction
and extended time testing. She also worked at schools in St. Helenda,
Manhattan Beach, San Diego and Oxnard.
Survivors include her brother, Martin, sister-in-law Sharon, and nieces
Colleen, Grace and Julie.
The funeral Mass was held Nov. 13 at Christ the King Church in Pleasant
Hill. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Sister Josephine Martin Memorial
Fund, Carondelet High School, 1133 Winton Dr., Concord, CA 94518.
