Pope Benedict to visit Turkey next week

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Although prayers and meetings with Orthodox leaders dominate the schedule of Pope Benedict XVI’s Nov. 28-Dec. 1 trip to Turkey, he also will meet government and Muslim leaders.

Pope Benedict will pray with and meet privately with Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople on Nov. 29 and attend his celebration of the St. Andrew feast day liturgy on Nov. 30. The pope also will meet in Istanbul with Armenian Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Jewish and Catholic leaders.

The first day of his trip, which will be spent in Ankara, the capital, will be dedicated to relations with the Turkish government, its office overseeing religious affairs and ambassadors serving in the country. The head of the department of religious affairs is Turkey’s highest Muslim authority.

He is also scheduled to visit Ephesus and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. He will depart for Rome on Dec. 1 after Mass in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Istanbul.
EWTN, the Catholic TV network, will provide live coverage of the visit. See www.ewtn.comfor telecast times. EWTN is carried on Comcast Digital Channel 22, DISH Satellite Channel 261, and Direct TV Channel 422. In Alameda, it airs on Comcast Channel 30 and Alameda Power Channel 26.
