T. Paul Lee,
a native of China who served as chair of the InterFriendship House Association
in Berkeley for a decade, has been awarded the diocesan merit medal. Bishop
Emeritus John Cummins presented the medal to Lee’s wife who delivered
it to Lee in Beijing where he is working.
Lee, who holds a doctorate in computer science from UC Berkeley, has worked
in the computer industry in Silicon Valley and as a teacher at Santa Clara
University.
The InterFriendship House Association operates Friendship Center to provide
lodging and hospitality to visiting Chinese scholars and students at UC
Berkeley.
Lee has been instrumental in the center’s development. Its scope
of services ranges from advising on student life and psychological counseling
to sightseeing trips and tutoring in English.
“He has such a vision for the Church,” said Bishop Cummins.
“He sees the center not just about providing a residence, but of
giving Chinese visitors a chance to experience Church community.”
The center has more than 300 alumni, many of whom have returned to China.
Among them are those who were baptized after becoming acquainted with
Catholicism at the Center.
