Catholics
throughout the U.S. are being asked to contribute to the Church’s
domestic anti-poverty program, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development,
through a collection to be taken up in parishes Nov. 18-19.
The annual collection raises funds that support projects working to eliminate
the root causes of poverty in the U.S. This year, grants totaling $8,909,000
have been made to 326 projects in 47 states, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico. Four of those projects are in the East Bay – Contra
Costa ACORN in Bay Point, Oakland ACORN, and Just Cause and La Lucha del
Journalero, also in Oakland.
Funded projects undergo a thorough review process and are selected based
on need without regard to religious affiliation. Each project must focus
on creative, practical, long-term solutions to poverty, said Timothy Collins,
CCHD executive director.
According to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, 37 million people
in the U.S., or 12.6 percent of the total population, are living in poverty.
