Local groups awarded CCHD self-help grants

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the U.S. bishops’ domestic anti-poverty program, has awarded nearly $130,000 in national and local grants to nine community organizations in the East Bay.

National grants for $25,000 each were distributed to Contra Costa ACORN in Bay Point, for violence reduction and youth activities; La Lucha del Journalero in Oakland for leadership development for day laborers; and Oakland ACORN for slumlord abatement and school improvement. Just Cause in Oakland received a $20,000 grant for housing and jobs for low-income residents.

Local grants were awarded to: Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Oakland ($7,500); Community Recovery Services, Berkeley ($8,500); Indian People Organizing for Change, Alameda ($1,000); St. Mary’s Center, Oakland ($7,500), and United Seniors of Oakland ($7,500).

The funds distributed by CCHD come from Catholics who donate to an annual nationwide church collection. One-quarter of the local collection stays in the diocese and the rest is distributed nationally.
