Oakland’s St. Mary’s Center will host a
local observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty,
Oct. 17, with a focus on hunger, homelessness and health care.
The program will begin at 9 a.m. at 635 22nd St. in Oakland, where clients
of St. Mary’s Center and other service organizations will deliver
testimonies about their individual struggles with poverty. Anuradha Mittal
of The Oakland Institute will deliver a keynote message and weave together
the earlier presentations into action platforms.
At 11 a.m. participants will walk to city center where they will gather
at the steps of city hall, the state building and the federal building
to present their concerns to politicians.
International Day to Eradicate Poverty was officially recognized by the
United Nations in 1992. Catholic groups co-sponsoring the local event
include the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Sisters of St. Joseph
of Orange, and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Alameda County.
