Michael Feinstein,
the internationally acclaimed vocalist and pianist, will appear in concert
at the Holy Names University Regents Theater on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Proceeds
from the event will go towards raising scholarship funds for the Oakland
school.
Over the past three decades, Feinstein has established himself as a dedicated
musical anthropologist and archivist as well as a performer. A four-time
Grammy nominee, he has been heralded by the media for his unique and lasting
style.
The New York Times has said of him, “There are essentially two Michael
Feinsteins. One is the super-suave pianist and crooner, musical scholar
and archivist of traditional American pop who idolizes Fred Astaire and
seems to know the words to every obscure verse for every theater and movie
song ever written. The other is a stand-up entertainer who
wisecracks, mugs, does comic shtick and has recently begun presenting
himself as a finger-snapping swing vocalist in a post-Sinatra style.”
The scholarship fundraiser is one of two major happenings at Holy Names
this fall. The first – a totally refurbished Science Facility --
was waiting for students when they returned to campus Aug. 28.
During the summer, the school renovated Brennan Hall’s second floor
– headquarters for all of the sciences taught on campus. The new
facility features the technology of interactive smart boards, flat panel
monitors, and digital/computer based laboratory hard and software that
will bring the learning done in the classroom or laboratory into line
with market place technology, said Holy Names Sister Nancy Teskey, project
director and teacher of biological sciences.
Just about every student who attends Holy Names – both science and
liberal arts majors -- will benefit from this renovation, said John Bowman,
director of marketing and communication. The project cost $4.95 million.
Tickets for the Michael Feinstein event are $250 each and can be purchased
through City Box Office or by calling (510) 436-1245. The evening will
include a catered pre-concert reception.
