Seminar to examine religious pluralism
and democracy

The Graduate Theological Union of Berkeley and the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California will co-sponsor a seminar on religion and democracy, Aug. 16 at the Islamic Cultural Center, 1433 Madison St. in Oakland.

The day-long seminar will focus upon religious pluralism and the intersection of faith and society.

Featured speakers will be UC Berkeley scholar, Huston Smith, author of “Why Religion Matters” and “The World’s Religions”; Seyyed Hossein Nasr, professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; and Khaled Abou El Fadl, professor of law at UCLA School of Law, and author of “The Great Theft: Wrestling Islam From the Extremists.”

There will also be an interfaith panel with scholars from the GTU and other academic centers.
