The Catholic
Theological Society of America has bestowed its esteemed John Courtney
Murray Award on theologian Sandra Schneiders, a professor of New Testament
and Christian Spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley
for the past 30 years.
Schneiders, a Sister Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, was cited
for original contributions in three distinct disciplines – biblical
studies, spirituality and theology.
Calling her a “master teacher” and a “versatile scholar”
who is “passionately committed to the reform of the Church and the
pursuit of justice, especially justice for women,” the Society highlighted
her numerous accomplishments during an awards ceremony last month in San
Antonio.
Sister Schneiders is the author of nine books (four of which gained national
awards), more than 80 published articles and 50 book chapters. She has
lectured around the world on the New Testament, the theology and spiritually
of religious life, feminist hermeneutics, and the Christian mystical tradition.
She is a founding member of the doctoral program in Christian Spirituality
at the Graduate Theological Union.
She earned a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian
University in Rome, graduating summa cum laude in 1975. She also holds
a licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique in Paris
as well as a Master’s degree in philosophy from the University of
Detroit.
In receiving the award, she thanked Bishop Emeritus John Cummins of Oakland
for being “a rock of support to the Catholic theologians in his
diocese and beyond.” She also expressed gratitude to colleagues
at the GTU and to a Carmelite nun in Baltimore who, she said, “reminds
me that real theology is always, first prayer.”
The first John Courtney Murray Award was given in 1972 to Charles Curran.
Other theologians to receive the award include Franciscan Father Kenan
Osborne, former president of the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley;
Jesuit Father Michael Buckley who taught at JSTB, Ladislas Orsy, Gregory
Baum, Gerard Sloyan, Bernard Cooke, Richard McBrien and Bernard Lonergan.
