Holy Spirit/Newman
Parish in Berkeley is hosting two experts on the growing AIDS crisis in
Vietnam during a community forum, July 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Father John Toai, a priest of St. Camillus, works on HIV/AIDS care and
support programs for the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City. He graduated
from medical college as a physician’s assistant before joining religious
life.
Tenley Mogk, who holds a master’s degree in public health from Columbia
University, is spearheading a new AIDS treatment program in Vietnam, funded
by Catholic Relief Services. She is also establishing a community-based
drug recovery program.
An average of 100 people are contracting HIV each day in Vietnam. Most
are drug users sharing needles and commercial sex workers and their partners.
Both speakers will discuss the growing crisis and what the Church is doing
to respond.
