Sister Virginia
Marie Straight, a longtime educator who taught at two Catholic schools
in Alameda, died June 7 at the age of 98. She had been a Sister of Notre
Dame de Namur for 77 years.
Sister Straight spent 60 years teaching in Notre Dame elementary and high
schools throughout California and at the College of Notre Dame, now Notre
Dame de Namur University in Belmont. Her specialties were music and Spanish.
She taught at St. Joseph’s Elementary School and Notre Dame High
School in Alameda in the 1950s.
She lived the past eight years at the Mercy Retirement and Care Center
in Oakland.
During a June 12 Memorial Mass at Notre Dame Province Center in Belmont,
Sister Straight was remembered as a talented musician who could play all
the instruments, who loved teaching others to play, and who could organize
everything from a drum corps for little children to a string ensemble
for college students.
Burial was at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Memorial contributions may
