OBITUARY

Father Andrew Harris, OMI

Father Andrew Harris, former provincial of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, died March 8 at the Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland. He was 79.

Born in Ballyduff, County Waterford in Ireland, Father Harris entered the Oblate College at Raheny, County Dublin in 1941. Following graduation in 1946, he went to the Oblate Novitiate and studied philosophy and theology in preparation for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1953 and was assigned to the Oblate’s Western Province of the United States the following year.

His ministry was varied and included work as a pastor, a member of the Oblate Preaching Band, and a teacher. He taught at Bishop O’Dowd High School from 1967 to 1975. During his years in the Bay Area he earned a master’s degree in counseling from Santa Clara University. He served as provincial of the Western Province from 1984 to 1990.

His health began to fail during his final assignment as pastor at St. Helen Parish in Sweet Home, Oregon, and he moved to Mercy Retirement and Care Center in 2005.

A memorial Mass was held March 18 at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Crockett. The funeral Mass and burial took place in the San Fernando Valley.
