In an effort
to increase religious vocations within the African American, Filipino,
Latino, and Vietnamese communities, Bishop Allen Vigneron has appointed
four priests as ethnic vocation directors.
Each priest will collaborate with Father Larry D’Anjou, diocesan
vocations director, to develop effective ways to foster vocations in their
respective communities. They will also serve as mentors to priesthood
candidates and assist Father D’Anjou in assessing men wishing to
become seminarians.
Father Tom Edwards, parochial vicar at Sacred Heart and St. Andrew-St.
Joseph parishes in Oakland, will continue to promote vocations within
the African American community. For the past several years as director
of the Father Augustus Tolton Society, he has been encouraging black men
to consider priesthood.
In his new capacity, Father Edwards will continue that effort and share
his experience with the other new ethnic vocations directors — Father
Tito Bonoan, chaplain at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward; Father
Ruben Morales, parochial vicar at St. Louis Bertrand Parish in Oakland;
and Father Bich Nguyen, parochial vicar at St. Leander Parish in San Leandro.
Each of the new directors will spend about five hours a week making contacts
within parishes that have high numbers of persons of their ethnic background.
