Chautauqua XIII: A multi-cultural celebration

Members of the ethnic communities participate in a Marian procession at the opening of Chautauqua XIII.

Hundreds of members of the Oakland Diocese’s ethnic communities joined with parishioners of St. Raymond Parish in Dublin, Oct. 1, for Chautauqua XIII, the annual multi-cultural celebration, at the Dublin church with Oakland Bishop Allen Vigneron and Bishop Emeritus John Cummins.

The event, which draws upon and honors the diocese’s broad Catholic heritage, began with a procession honoring Mary. Each community carried a Marian statue as they sang Marian hymns in various languages – Spanish, Indonesian, Tongan, Portuguese, Cantonese, Polish, Korean, Nigerian, Kmhmu, Ge’ez, Filipino, Vietnamese, Fijian and English.
They stopped at a shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe where they sang the “Mananitas” to the Virgin.

Mass followed the procession. After Mass, the celebration continued with ethnic foods and entertainment.
