Catholic Charities of the East Bay is looking for parishes
and other groups to “adopt” families who have come to the
diocese in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The sponsors will help the evacuee
families with housing, clothes, food, school enrollment and other needs.
According to Millie Burns, director of planning and program development
at CCEB, the agency is helping 30 families. Five have already been assigned
to parishes. Among those still in need of sponsorship are:
• Single mom with two-month-old infant daughter. She got an apartment
from her grandfather on Oct. 1, but needs furniture, help with utility
bill payments and set-up fees.
• Single mom with five children, five to 13 years old, staying with
a relative. They are still looking for her fiancée, who was in
Louisiana. The family is attending St. Bernard Parish in Oakland.
• Single, elderly man and his uncle. Both need housing and are staying
with relatives. They need clothes, sheets, blankets, dishes, pots, eyeglasses
and dental care.
• Eight family members from two to 43 years of age, staying with
a cousin. They need affordable housing, clothes, food, transportation,
baby supplies and medications.
• Single mom with three kids, 6 months to 17 years old. They have
Section 8 housing in Richmond and need a $900 deposit to move in on Oct.
15. They will also need furniture, household items, clothing and food.
• Single mom with two kids, six and four years old. They have signed
up for public assistance and need affordable housing, food, employment,
bus passes and transportation. They will also need furniture.
• Client, his grandmother, three girls nine to 11 years of age,
and three granddaughters, ages 13 to 18 years, who arrived Sept. 26. The
granddaughters hitchhiked to Oakland and were harmed on the way to the
Bay Area. CCEB has given the family seven food vouchers. They need affordable
housing and help with rental costs, food, clothing, transportation, school
enrollment and medications. They are currently on an extended stay in
a hotel and need ready-to-eat meals.
• Husband and wife with two kids, 13 and four years of age, staying
with a cousin in Oakland. They need affordable housing, clothes, shoes,
school enrollment, furniture and household items.
• Single mom with three kids, 6 to 15 years of age. They need housing,
food, clothing, transportation and toiletries
• Single mom with one child in high school. She needs help with
the rent and move-in deposit - $1420 and $740, respectively.
