Concert
for Katrina aid
Popular
Vietnamese singer Duc Dat performs at a benefit concert, Sept. 10, at
St. Mary-St. Francis de Sales Church in Oakland. The concert, which featured
several Vietnamese singers from Los Angeles, raised money for Catholic
Charities USA’s efforts to aid survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Eucharist
Year ends
Bishop Allen Vigneron will celebrate a special Mass at
7 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Oakland’s St. Elizabeth Church to mark the end
the Year of the Eucharist, established last year by the late Pope John
Paul II. The Year of the Eucharist began with the International Eucharistic
Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, which was attended by Bishop Emeritus
John Cummins and several people from the Oakland Diocese.
Throughout this special year Catholics were called to honor the Eucharist
by strengthening and deepening their prayer life.

Bless
the Animals
Attention pet guardians or all who have a furry, feathered, finned, hooved,
or reptilian companion in their lives! Franciscan Father Floyd A. Lotito
and the Franciscan Friars will have the Sixteenth Annual Blessing
of the Animals, honoring the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi,
the patron saint of the city, on Oct. 1 from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in St.
Boniface Churchyard, 133 Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco. The Friars
will bless the pets at 1:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and at 3 p.m.

Young

Catholic school and parish choirs are invited to register now for the
Pueri Cantores Festival and Mass, which will bring together several
hundred singers, ages 7 – 18, from the five Bay Area dioceses on
May 6, 2006. San Jose Bishop Patrick McGrath will celebrate the 4:30 p.m.
Mass at San Jose’s cathedral.
Noted American conductor Lee Gwozdz, music director at the Cathedral of
Corpus Christi, will conduct the choristers. Participants will sing during
the Mass as one large combined choir. Pueri Cantores is the official student
choral organization of the Catholic Church and includes 60,000 singers

Members of
St. Anne Parish in Union City came together on Sept. 14 to honor
their pastor, Father Ramon Gomez, who marked the 20th
anniversary of his ordination.
Since Sept. 4, St. Leo Parish in Oakland has tolled its
bells 30 times at 12:15 p.m. for those who have died in the previous week
in Iraq and Afghanistan. This action, known as the “Ring of Remembrance,”
joins churches across the nation that call themselves FaithfulAmerica
as they pray for the end of violence in the world.
All who hear the bells are invited to pause in prayer for peace and for

Fall workshops for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, due
either through death or divorce, will begin the first week of October
at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton. The divorced/separated
workshop starts Oct. 5 and continues on Wednesdays through Dec. 14. The
bereavement workshop begins on Oct. 6 and continues on Thursdays through
Dec. 1.
Both groups meet at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel at St. Elizabeth Seton, 4001
Stoneridge Dr. in Pleasanton. Advance registration is required. No charge,

Since April 1, members of the outreach committee at St. Perpetua
Parish in Lafayette have fed about 75 people each month at the
North Concord Shelter.
And speaking of St. Perpetua Parish, Raymond Garner,
director of music ministries will shine the spotlight on the parish’s
new organ during a concert of classical organ music, Sept. 25 (see the
Datelines page). The organ, built by Rodgers Organ Co. of Hillsboro, Ore.
is a Trillium Model 967 that includes three manuals and pedal, comprising
132 speaking stops.
The Catholic Community of Pleasanton, St. Charles Borromeo Parish
in Livermore, St. Isidore Parish in Danville, St. Raymond Parish in Dublin
and St. Michael in Livermore are among the parishes that have
raised and contributed funds for the Birthright Pregnancy Support Service
in Livermore.

Club at St. Isidore Parish in Danville has been reading
and discussing “The Rhythm of Life – Living Every Day With
Passion and Purpose” by Matthew Kelly; the October book selection

Students at
St. Mary’s College in Moraga placed 3,000 flags
on the chapel lawn in observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks
that killed at least 2,981 people.
Kyle Gregorio, a 14-year-old freshman at Moreau
Catholic High School in Hayward, performed in a benefit piano
recital on Sept. 11 at Cal State University Hayward. Proceeds went to
the church building fund at St. Anne Parish in Union City.

The diocesan
Department of Parish Catechetical Outreach has a new name – Department
for Evangelization and Catechesis—but the mission remains
the same: To serve parish and ethnic communities in their work of life-long
faith formation.
Best wishes go to Sylvia and Kyle Griggs, members at
St. Michael Parish in Livermore, who recently marked
the 50th year of their marriage.
Congratulations also to Jocelyn and Pat O’Brien
who are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. They have been members
at St. Raymond Parish in Dublin since 1962.
The diocesan Lay Ecclesial Ministry Council is hosting
its 4th Annual Convocation, Blessing Rite and Dinner on Oct. 13 at St.
Joan of Arc Parish in San Ramon. Dominican Father Michael Sweeney, president
of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley and co-founder
of Siena Institute, will discuss, “Why Lay Ecclesial Ministry?”
Father George Mockel, diocesan vicar general, will preside at the blessing
