Hundreds of Catholics gather in Fremont
for India Day

Bishop Allen Vigneron, joined by Indian priests serving in the Oakland Diocese, and Father Gerry Moran (third from right), celebrates Mass during India Day.

By Voice staff

More than 800 Catholics gathered at Holy Spirit Church in Fremont, Aug. 7, for India Day. Bay Area Indians, Pakistanis, Fijians, Sri Lankans and those from other Indian subcontinent Catholic communities joined Oakland Bishop Allen Vigneron for Mass, followed by cultural entertainment and dinner.

The Asian Indian Pastoral Center and leaders of the various Indian communities coordinated the celebration. Salesian Father Mathew Vellankal, parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Fremont, served as chairperson for the event.

Women present flowers and candles during the Offertory procession.
