| Mercy
Sister Mary Waskowiak was elected June 28 to serve as president of the
Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, a religious community
that spans the United States and 12 other countries.
Delegates meeting in Laredo, Texas, selected the San Bruno native to a
six-year term on the first ballot. She will work with a team of four other
Sisters to lead the Institute, which is comprised of 5,000 Sisters and
1,600 associates.
A former teacher of religion at Mercy High San Francisco and Mercy High
Burlingame, she also served as director of Mercy Center in Burlingame
from 1987 to 1991 and since 2003 has been president of the Sisters of
Mercy Burlingame Regional Community.
From 1991 to 1999, she was a member of the Institute of the Sisters of
Mercy Leadership Team and during the last of those years served as president
of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
