Holy Names University considers
producing ‘Dead Man Walking’

The Campus Ministry office of Holy Names University is exploring the possibility of staging “Dead Man Walking” during next spring in collaboration with the Oakland school’s drama department.

Tim Robbins, director of the “Dead Man Walking” movie adaptation of Sister Prejean’s book, wrote a stage version in 2002 and is allowing it to be performed in high schools and colleges royalty-free, provided that study of the death penalty is included in at least one study discipline besides the theater department. Robbins wrote the play after Sister Prejean convinced him that unless the arts address the issue of state killings, most people are never going to get close to them.

St. Thomas Aquinas Dominican Sister Sharon Casey, director of campus ministry at Holy Names, said she was inspired to take on the project after hearing Sister Prejean speak on campus earlier this summer.

This past spring, 20 schools nation-wide presented the workshop production including Loyola University in Chicago.
