A two-day conference promoting happiness and spiritual
and emotional health among older adults will take place July 28-29 at
Church of the Resurrection in Sunnyvale.
“Beyond Bingo: Uplifting the Elder Spirit” will feature 11
workshops spanning topics from nutrition to forgiveness. Sessions will
be held each day from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and are open to seniors, parish
workers, retirement home staff, clergy, nurses and social workers.
Sponsored by the Center for Gerontology, Spirituality and Faith, an outreach
of Sunny View Lutheran Home in Cupertino, the conference will open with
Healing Rhythms, a group of women drummers led by Arlene Goetze, founding
editor of the Catholic Women’s Network newspaper. The group provides
meditative drumming to residents of nursing homes.
Julia Ross, author of “The Mood Cure,” will discuss the importance
of food in maintaining an optimistic approach to life and overcoming depression.
Dominican Sister Ursula Bomholt, a spiritual director, will speak on the
role of forgiveness in finding peace and happiness in later life.
Michael Peck of San Jose State University will explore ways to integrate
into one’s life both positive and negative experiences. Suzanne
Young, a spiritual director, will offer ideas on ways of “Stirring
Up the Senses for Lively Living.”
Registration for the conference is $35 per day. CEU’s are available;
daily CEU tuition is $15. Lunch is $10 per day, or attendees may bring
brown bag fare.
