Graduation
retreat These graduating 8th graders
at St. Felicitas School in San Leandro join in clean-up duty during
their class’s three-day retreat at the diocesan Youth Retreat
Center. Twenty-four students were led in prayer, reflection, and discussion
by adult volunteers and some former retreat participants now in their
late teens and early 20s. Father Wayne Campbell, pastor, celebrated
an outdoor Mass at the retreat’s end.

Gary Nelson, a member of Assumption
Parish in San Leandro, was elected state deputy of the Knights
of Columbus last month. Nelson, who will be installed for the one-year
term on July 9 at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, will be responsible
for the statewide operations of the fraternal organization which has some
62,000-plus Knights and some 530 councils in California. Father
Paul Minnihan, pastor at St. Monica Parish in Moraga,
will be the celebrant at the 5 p.m. Mass. Father Minnihan will also be
installed as state chaplain. A hosted reception and dinner will follow

Congratulations go to Jon E. Rosell, III, a member of
the Catholic Community of Pleasanton, for completing
his Eagle Scout Project – a flagpole at the Ridge View Commons in
Pleasanton. Rosell raised funds and oversaw the erection of the flagpole
and oversaw the May 30 dedication and flag presentation ceremony. Many
of the residents at Ridge View, a residential community in Pleasanton,
are veterans of World War II and the Korean War.
Diane Gilfether, a member of St. Joan of Arc
Parish in San Ramon and a trustee at Holy Names University
in Oakland, directs the Blackhawk Chorus of Danville, which will
be singing at a June 14 Mass at the Vatican. Several chorus members belong
to St. Joan’s and St. Isidore Parish in Danville.
Two thumbs way up to the students at Our Lady
of Grace School in Castro Valley who have been shining examples
of stewardship in their community. Throughout the year students have shared
their “treasure” during the monthly school liturgy and have
been able to distribute $1,000 to five organizations that aid women and
children.
A standing ovation to Noelle Blanchard, a sophomore at
Holy Names High School in Oakland, who has received a
full scholarship to the 2005 Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar at
the University of Michigan, “Race, Space and American Identity.”
This six-week educational program provides a college-level seminar for
gifted and highly motivated high school sophomores.
Scott Hugo, a senior at De La Salle High School
in Concord and an incoming freshman at UCLA, is one of 135 California
high school graduates to be named a National Merit Scholar.
A group of students in the 6th – 8th grades at St. Isidore
School in Danville received a close-up look at entrepreneurship
last month when they went to McCovey’s Restaurant in Walnut Creek.
They talked to the owner, manager and the head chef to learn what it takes
to build and a run a successful restaurant.
Happy Birthday Blessings go to Marguerite Scheffler,
a member at St. Anne Church in Walnut Creek, who celebrated
her 100th birthday on May 28.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, there will be a major rally and march to the Livermore
Nuclear Weapons Lab to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Organizers will also call for
an end to the war in Iraq, bringing the troops home and creating jobs
for peace. The event begins at 5 p.m. at William Payne Park in Livermore.
Family Connections Adoptions will hold a free information
session on July 2 at the Family Connections Adoptions building, 1120 Tully

Sutter VNA and Hospice is offering two grief support
groups in San Leandro. “Partner Loss,” a continuing group,
meets Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. – noon. “Daughters Grieving Their
Mothers,” an 8-week group, will be held Thursdays, 7 – 9 p.m.,
